The physical education department at Deception Bay State High School is a vivid representation of this schools ability to specifically cater for the multitude of potential career pathways that exist within today's world of sport and physical activity.

Successfully driving such a program is a team of highly experienced and enthusiastic, coaches, trainers and staff members. Deception Bay State High School offers courses from Junior Health, Soccer Development Program (enrichment years 8-12), and Senior Physical Education, to Certificate II in Sport and Recreation, and Certificates III (GYM instructor) and IV (Personal Trainer) in Fitness.

Integrated into these courses are numerous curricular and co-curricular experiences, with a depth of excursions, field studies, tournaments and vocational training. With facilities such as a multi-court indoor GYM, a multi-court outdoor surface, a full weights room, permanent outdoor fitness circuit, full indoor rock wall, beautifully manicured outdoor fields, and a full state-of-the-art community high ropes facility, it is no wonder participation rates across the Physical education faculty are extremely high.

Subject Overviews

Middle Phase HPE

The middle phase HPE program at Deception Bay State High school runs from years 8 to 9, and delivers 2 x 70 min contact lessons a week. Not only does this subject prepare students for senior sport based subjects, it also provides a framework for the establishment of the Dimensions of Learning pedagogy within a sport-based context. It has a primary focus of healthy lifestyles through participation in sport, fitness and training, yet still tackles some of the harder health related issues of relationships, drugs and alcohol, and decision making beyond the moment.

Physical Education

Physical Education focuses on physical activity in Australian society and involves learning in, through and about physical activity.  Students will be assessed on criteria in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course and both aspects are weighted equally.  The theory units studied relate directly to the selected physical activity the students are participating in.

Certificate II in Sport and Recreation (SIS20313) / Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20513)

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a range of activities and functions with a focus on customer contact such as assisting with the conduct of recreation activities, and facility maintenance and operations. Work may be undertaken as part of a team and would be performed under supervision. Work would be undertaken in locations such as community recreation centres or facilities, indoor recreation facilities, and leisure and aquatic centres.

The Certificate II in Sport and Recreation qualification is offered across years 10 and 11. Students then have an opportunity to enrol in Certificate II in Sports Coaching as these courses compliment each other.

Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30313)

This qualification is delivered exclusively by Deception Bay state High staff, with the school being the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for the qualification. In setting it up this way, we can offer this qualification to the student for free. Making us one of only a couple of schools in Queensland to do so.

In order to complete competencies, students are exposed to both practical and theory work.
