The Science department delivers the National Curriculum in years 8 & 9 and runs four subjects in the senior years.  Biology, Chemistry and Physics are authority subjects that contribute towards an overall position (OP) for University entry.  Horticulture is a vocational subject, our school offers a Certificate II in Horticulture.

Our department also runs extra programs in addition to the main subjects, including robotics, ICAS Science competition, and the Australia/New Zealand Brain Bee.

The Science department is supported by a Science Operations Officer working in a well-equipped preparatory lab.  We also have a shed and enclosed propagation/garden area for our Horticulture program.

Subject Overviews

Biology

In Senior Biology, students study a range of biological concepts.  There are two excursions, in Year 11 to MERF for an anatomy tutorial and in Year 12 to Stradbroke Island for a field study.

In Year 11 students study Cells and Energetics, Evolution, Anatomy and Physiology and Homeostasis.

In Year 12 (and 10) students study Genetics, Ecology, Reproduction and Immunity.

Assessment can be exams, extended experimental investigations or extended response tasks.

Chemistry

In Senior Chemistry, students study a range of chemical concepts.  It is preferred that students also study Maths B as good numeracy skills are required in this subject.

In Year 11 (and 10) students study Fundamental Chemistry, Water, Fuels and Air.

In Year 12 students study Equilibrium, Polymers, Corrosion and Forensics.

Assessment can be exams, extended experimental investigations or extended response tasks.

Physics

In Senior Physics, students study a range of physics concepts.  It is preferred that’s students also study Maths B as good numeracy skills are required for success in this subject.

The course runs in a two-year cycle and students will study units including Electronics, Waves, Space, Electricity, Magnetism and Relativity.  The course also includes an excursion to Dream World to study forces.

Assessment can be exams, extended experimental investigations or extended response tasks.

Horticulture

Horticulture is the science, technology, and business involved in intensive plant cultivation for human use.  We offer a Cert II in Horticulture.

We have excellent facilities and equipment available to us at school and links with local horticulture businesses.  We have a shed and a shaded, enclosed propagation and cultivation area.

Competencies include operating chainsaws, propagation, landscaping, construction, chemical use, maintenance and grass renovation.

Students wishing to student this course should be prepared for significant physical work.
